MICHAEL WALTER

(OWNER / STUDIO MANAGER) Several years ago, as an instructor of AP Macroeconomics and Economics to DISD high school seniors, Michael was presented with the opportunity to begin his own journey into entrepreneurship, a path he had encouraged and mentored so many of his students to take. Abandoning legions of forthcoming and erstwhile students, Michael led the formation of the partnership of Root Down LLC in 2013 to take the helm of the legendary Crystal Clear Sound Studios. Venturing forth to fulfill his dream of experiencing all of the dizzying highs and soul-crushing lows that the Music Recording Business has to offer, he successfully convinced his two inimical personas – Underappreciated Musical Artist and Sagacious (yet affable) Business Guy - to reconcile their petty differences. A calmer, more self-realized Michael now assists other artists who similarly wish to unite their own artistic visions with prudent business goals. A performing percussionist and drummer for over 35 years, Michael has snared nearly every pickup gig or position available, from marching percussion clinician to Adjunct Professor of Percussion at his alma mater Hendrix College, from musical theater to the Arkansas Symphony, from accompanying Jennifer Flowers and providing rimshot kicks for Slim Goodbody and Red Skelton, to touring with a really ripping Elvis impersonator. Aesthetically grateful to no longer be hustling the dinner theater circuit, Michael has since 2003 focused on furnishing the groove for the internationally renowned heavy-fuzz power trio WO FAT (Nasoni, Small Stone, and Ripple Records) with guitarist and business partner, Kent Stump, and local superstar bassist and beloved pantomath, Zack Busby. When he is not making music or helping others make theirs, Michael enjoys spending time with his very large and rowdy family of boys, his graceful and lovely wife Marion, and living in service to his cat Ringo, the smartest cat on planet Earth, and Sunshine, who is also a cat.

KENT STUMP

(OWNER/CHIEF ENGINEER) Kent has over 23 years of experience as a recording, mixing and mastering engineer and has been an engineer with Crystal Clear Sound since 1997. He learned the tried and true, classic analog methods of recording, mic’ing and mixing, starting in the days when 2” analog tape was the standard recording medium. But he is also a master with Pro Tools and working in the digital world, and when it comes to drum sounds, there is no one better. Kent has been playing trombone and guitar professionally for 35 years. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music, in Jazz Studies / Performance from the College of Music at the University of North Texas and in addition to his work in the studio has spent time as a touring musician in a variety of situations, including playing in the orchestra for a touring Broadway show to multpile international tours to Europe, Australia and New Zealand with Wo Fat, the band the both he and business partner, Michael Walter, play in together. In the studio he has worked with a wide range of artists and on many different projects - including Hank Thompson, Reverend Horton Heat, Forever the Sickest Kids, Green River Ordinance and co-engineered and mixed the Grammy nominated 2001 Brave Combo album, "Kick Ass Polkas." He also contributed engineering for parts of songs by Julian Lennon, Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor. The rich musical background that Kent brings to his approach to engineering gives him a skill set that many engineers lack. He can speak the language of musicans and understand charts, scores and terminology, which makes sessions flow smoothly and easily. This also means he brings that musician’s ear to the sonic aspects of recording and mixing, focusing on music over technical things, giving to give you the most musical product.
